Toenail fungus is a common problem that can be developed easily in anyone. It can affect any of your toenails and make its appearance poor. If it is affected on a single toenail, it can reach to other nails too. This problem is common for those individuals, who are suffering from diabetes.

Before getting to remedies, it is important to find out the cause of toenail fungus. It is caused by certain microscopic organisms that grow in damp and dark places. They find feet as a perfect place for breeding because feet may tend to remain damp for a long period of time due to sweat. This fungus can reach your feet from various places that are moist like a swimming pool or a locker room.

Even due to aging, you may be prone to get affected by toenail fungus. As people age, their nails growth becomes slower and the blood supply becomes poor. This causes the fungal problem to arise more often. It has been observed that men tend to get fungal infection more than women. One cause of the infection may be inheritance too. If it runs in family, then you might not be able to get rid of it.

There are various toenail fungus remedies that can help in reducing the infection in a natural way. Here are some of them discussed below:

Using household vinegar

Take one part of vinegar and add it in 2 parts of water and soak your foot in it for about 20 minutes. Repeat this daily.

Use medicated chest rub

Medicated chest rub has proven to be effective in stopping the growth of fungal infection if it is applied to the toenail directly.

Isopropyl alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol can also be applied to the affected toenail directly. If it is not available then you can go for hydrogen hydroxide. Apply it to the nail several times a day. This is going to prove helpful in clearing the infection.

Other remedies

  • Using tea tree oil can also help.

  • You can also use anti-fungal cream on the affected toe and skin area too. It often works if the fungus is not that severe.

  • Some say that dandruff shampoo can also effectively treat toenail fungus.

If the remedies do not work and the fungal infection has reached far, then doctor may recommend going for a laser treatment. The physician before going for the laser treatment would though prescribe other methods for the fungal removal too. If they work, there won’t be any need to go for laser treatment. In some cases, the only solution left is to remove the nail bed. But don’t worry, as the nail will grow back again gradually. Prevention will be required to make sure that the infection does not come back again after treatment.
